Indesign Assignment–Magazine Cover

We have talked about the different elements of magazine covers. If you need a reminder, ask to review the Keynote presentation. Using InDesign, you will design a magazine cover that looks as “real” as possible. You can duplicate an existing magazine or come up with your own original idea. If you are trying to duplicate an existing magazine, make sure you pay attention to your fonts.

Include the magazine name (obviously, a picture or illustration and the usual text describing what’s inside the magazine (as well as a date/volume/issue number etc)

A Google image search for “magazine cover” should provide plenty of inspiration.

I thought it might be nice to take a quick break and make sure we are all on the same page. We are multi-tasking right now. The goal is two fold. First, I want you to learn about the camera you are going to be using for the digital photography section of the class. Some of you have your own camera available and I encourage you to use it. Others may need to borrow one of the camera available in class. That’s why you have to multi-task. We don’t have enough cameras for everyone to do the same assignment at the same time. The second goal is to begin practicing your skills in InDesign. In the future you will need to do some time management of your own. Whether you work on an InDesign assignment or a Photography assignment will be determined by whether you have a digital camera available. So where are we right now? Here’s a summary of what we are working on.

You should be finishing up the 3 fold brochure you created in InDesign. Remember to do a FILE>PLACE to get photos or graphics into your brochure. When you are done Please PRINT, FOLD and TURN IN to the hand in bin. Make sure your name is on the brochure and also list any sources of photos or graphics that you used. ALSO, turn in a digital copy to my drop box. It should be saved as 2w_info_lastname
In the Google docs you have one document that says to put any good links in it. If you find something the you think others can use, please share the link.
In Google docs you also have a set of questions to answer. Type your answers in the document. Please change the color of your text so I can find your answers.

REMEMBER This is not a copy and past exercise. Put the answers in your own words. Make sure you understand what y ou are writing. If not….ASK.

Getting to know my camera

The first assignment will incorporate InDesign and your digital camera. The purpose of this assignment is to learn about the digital camera you will be using and to practice laying out pages in InDesign.

You will be making a 3-fold brochure about your camera and its features. You need to use another camera to take photos of your camera to include. To get an idea of how the brochure will be laid out, take a blank piece of paper, fold it in 3 sections and do a thumbnail sketch of your brochure.

You must include:

The basic info about your camera. (Tech specs)
Pictures of your camera with labels of the features and interface

Find and explain these concepts as they relate to your camera (in your brochure)

Pixel count
White balance
Image stabilization
Digital zoom
Optical zoon
JPG, RAW, TIF
Card size type and how many pictures it will hold
